Until the Last

( a long-term documentaion and study since 2014 )

China is creating a new civilism, by restructuring and development of their cultural domestic identity. Extreme urban densification prevails in China´s megacities. The cities are constantly transforming, growing and changing. The new replaces the old.

Until the Last is a long-term photographic documentation and research to understand the domestic Chinese culture. My intention is to archive and interpret through my photography the adapted domestic culture of ordinary Chinese people and their urban communities living in 4 major cities defined by North - Beijing, East-Shanghai, South - Guangzhou, and West - Urumqi.

After years of destruction and urban growth, rapid urban development and change, older neighborhoods are on the edge to disappear completely.  Photography seems to be the only way, to preserve this domestic cultural heritage. None of the portrayed families, homes, nor entire residential complexes remained by 2019. It can be seen as a regional inventory before these neighborhoods change or disappear completely, a historical document of China’s domestic culture in 4 major cities in China.
